ACTIVITIES TO DO AT THE CAMP
Cycling – Mongolia offers ideal Mountain biking territory, on mountain and forest tracks or offroad across rolling grasslands. We have specialized Rockhopper mountain bikes for hire or on our organised rides. From Nature’s Door Ger camp you can cycle along the lakeshore or explore the mountain tracks. These routes are great for day rides or overnight trips. For longer rides off the beaten track head out into the wilderness to the South West of Hatgal. This is area of mountain plateaux, woodland and grassy valleys. Follow jeep tracks and horse trails. Our Russian jeep can be used to support multi-day rides, carrying camping equipment and supplies.
Kayaking – At Nature’s Door you can rent kayak. Or choose our tailor-made kayaking trip at the Eg river. We take a leisurely trip on the Eg River downstream from Lake Hovsgol stopping to fish or visit local families. The Eg River, or Egiin Gol in Mongolian, drains Lake Hovsgol, eventually joining the Selenge River that flows into Lake Baigal in Russia. The first part of this rip passes through a wide valley dotted with gers where we will pass herds of horses and yaks drinking from the river. The valley then narrows, passing spectacular cliffs;some easy rapids add excitement. This tour provides good opportunities for bird watching, especially the mighty white tailed fish eagles soaring overhead.
Horse riding – The most authentic way to experience Mongolia is to travel on horseback accompanied by nomads; explore the mountains, forest and steppes on the hardy Mongolian horses. Horse riding is a great way to see the region and to experience the Mongolian way of life; riding is the primary form of transport in the countryside. The horses are traditional Mongolian ponies, small by European standards, but thoroughly suited for the rugged environment. Local guides look after the horses and give you any assistance. Rides can range from a couple of hours along the lake shore to longer treks of a week or more, covering 20-30km and riding 4-5 hours a day.
Hiking – A walking trek through the Hovsgol mountains to the Darhat Valley on the traditional trails used by the nomads between their summer pastures and winter quarters. This trek combines two of the best days of ridge walking on our Skyline Trail with a trek through the dramatic Horidal Saridag Mountains to the Darhat Valley.
Fishing – The Hovsgol region is a fisherman’s paradise. There are nine species of fish in the lake, but the most commonly caught are grayling and lenok. The lenok is a type of trout and the grayling is a different species to European or Arctic grayling. These fish can be caught from the lakeshore using spinners or a fly rod. Even beginners can be sure of a catch, and rod and tackle can be borrowed. It is there rivers of the Darhad valley that lure the keen fly-fisherman – wild rivers, like the Shiskid, teeming with grayling, lenok and the legendary taimen. The taimen can grow to over 150cm and 35kg. Late August, through to early October is the best time for fly fishing here. We can organise fishing trips to the Darhat. Valley, setting up our gers for your fishing camp on the Shiskid River. We will arrange all transport, fishing licenses and supplies.
Tailor-made trip – We have everything available to fully outfit expeditions and trips and can design a tailor-made itinerary to suit your own interests, be they fishing, mountain walking, horse riding, wildlife, visiting nomad family etc. Your trip can be fully guided by Natures Door staff, or if you are experienced you may prefer to be more independent and head off into the wilderness on horseback with a local guide. If you wish you can simply use our Natures Door ger camp at Lake Hovsgol as a base and explore the local area on shorter trips.
